Positive Behavior Intervention Support [PBIS]

The State Support Team employs PBIS as an operational framework for supporting all students within the education environment to have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral proactices and interventions possible.  PBIS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decion-making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavrioal practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

In general PBIS emphasized these integrated elements which support measurable outcomes:

  • data for decision making,
  • measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data,
  • practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and
  • systems that effieciently and effectively support implmentation of these practices.

Systems that support implementation of these practices are critical to the success of PBIS within shcool districts.  District LeadershipTeams establish goals and priorities for safe and suportive environments so that all students can learn.  Building Leadership Teams define the paramenters of support to students that will ensure social competence and academic success for students including those students from varied backgrounds and abilities.  Teacher Based Teams refince the specific instructin and intervention and monitor student success.  DCommunication across all levels of the system is important for the delivery of effective Positive Behanior Intervention Support.

SST3 offers ongoing professional development and support to district, building and teacher teams on PBIS.

This half day session is offered several times during the school year and can be customized for specific district needs.  It addresses the basics of PBIS and is designed for district and building leadership or leadership teams who are interested in exploring the use of a positive approach to behavior and learning for all students.  See the ESC Calendar of Events for scheduled times.

Positive Behavior Intervention Support: Universal Level, Part One and Two

This two part series (two full day sessions) is intended for building leadership or PBIS teams that are committed to implementing PBIS within their schools.  The sessions are offered several times during the school year and can be customized for specific district needs.  The participants will learn about the components of PBIS including establishing goals for the school, developing leadership teams, using data, establishing expectations for behavior, teaching expectations for behavior, encouraging behaviors, discouraging behaviors and monitoring emplementation and progress.  Teams will reprot on their progress of implementation of PBIS during the sessions.  See the ESC Calendar of Events for scheduled times.

School Wide Information System [SWIS]

SWIS is a web-based information system designed to help shcool personnel to use office referral data to design school-wide and indvidiual student interventions.  The three primary elements of SWIS are:
  • an effiencint system for gathering information,
  • a web-based computer applicaton for data entry and report generation, and
  • a practical process for using information for decision making
These three elements give school personnel the capability to evaluate individual student behavior, the behavior of groups of students, behavrios occurring in specific settings, and behaviors occuring during specific time perios fo the school day.  SWIS reports indicate times and/or locations prone to elicit problem behaviors, and allow teachers and administrators to shape school-wide environments to maximize students' academic and social achievements.  See the ESC Calendar of Events for scheduled times.

Second Step

The SST offers customized course offerings in Second Steps to districts upon request.  Contact Tracy Murphey at the SST, 216-446-3811.

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum is a research-based curriculum that teaches social and emotional skills for violence prevention.  The program is user-friendly and contains parent education components.  It aims to reduce impulsive and aggressive behaviors and increase protective factors and social competence in children from preschool through junior high.

Children learn how to respond empathically to others and practice skill steps for calming down, reducing anger, and solving problems.  The classroom-based curriculum, organized by grade level, teaches children to practice empathy, problem-solving skills, risk assessment, decision-making, and goal-setting.
