All students have the right to an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment as well as the right to feel that they belong in an inclusive setting. Adult teamwork plays a critical role in a successful co-teaching experience. All teachers share the responsibility for the learning of all students in an inclusive classroom, and no longer can students be viewed as “yours” or “mine”. The value of individual team members is not determined by titles or labels, but rather by the shared desire to contribute to all students’ educational programs. Some benefits of co-teaching include: more individualized instruction for all students, greater abundance of resources for problem solving, task achievement, and data collection, and more ample formative assessment opportunities to drive instruction, which all lead to higher achievement for every student in the classroom.
