Ohio Principal Evaluation System

In 2007, the Ohio Department of Education convened a group of educators (principals, superintendents, teachers and representatives from higher education) from across the state to design a model principal evaluation system. The Ohio Principal Evaluation System (OPES) was adopted by the State Board in fall, 2008.
OPES is designed to ensure
  • Professional growth through ongoing dialogue between the principal and the evaluator
  • Continuous improvement through fostering the growth of knowledge and skills over time
  • Incorporating new learning into practice
  • Regular reflection on practice to identify areas of strength and the areas for continued development
  • Collection of evidence to document performance and inform summative ratings
In 2011, the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County (ESC-CC) was one of the six ESCs awarded a grant, by the Ohio Department of Education, to provide and conduct regional OPES training as required by HB2, 153, and Race-to-the-Top.
