Beginning Teacher and Mentor Support Training 

The Transitional Program for Beginning Teachers offered through the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County (ESCCC) offers support to first-year teachers in districts throughout the county that the ESCCC employs staff in, as well as charter and community schools within Cuyahoga County that seek support. With this broad of a system, we always have a mixture of general and special education teachers in our program. The Transitional Program for Beginning Teachers serves all beginning teachers employed full time under a two-year provisional license, and teaching in the area(s) and level(s) listed on their licenses. Through regular meetings with all mentors and beginning teachers, observation and direct assistance in the classroom by mentors, and a web-based resource for discussion and resources, beginning teachers are offered the support necessary to help them meet the “real world” classroom challenges.

In Ohio, all beginning teachers must complete a formal program of support before they are issued a five-year professional license required to work as a fully-credentialed teacher in Ohio schools. Additionally, the ESCCC provides training to mentors to gain a deeper understanding of the principles of mentoring and coaching, as well as hands-on practice in conducting observations of these new teachers.
