Ohio House Bill 1, passed in July 2009, mandated a new licensure system for teachers in Ohio that included a Resident Educator license effective by January 2011. A four-year Resident Educator program of support and mentoring for new teachers will provide Ohio educators just entering the profession with quality mentoring and guidance essential for a long and flourishing career. Successful completion of the residency program is required to qualify for a five-year professional educator license. The Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County provides an optional, fee-based Resident Educator program designed to fully support beginning teachers, their mentors and the districts/schools employing these educators. This program includes an orientation and meetings for the Resident Educator and his/her assigned mentor throughout the year focusing on their work together within their district/school as well as related professional development topics chosen by participants designed to increase teacher effectiveness and therefore student achievement. Special attention is provided to state program requirements in order to fully support the beginning teachers throughout the residency experience. This program also includes training and support for the mentor teacher and program coordinators. Please contact Michele Shrefler at michele.shrefler@esc-cc.org at the ESC-CC for further information regarding the Resident Educator program.
