Description:  

This two-day workshop is designed to help high school and middle school English teachers bridge the gap between writing instruction at the secondary level and at the college level. Workshops will provide an overview of college-level writing expectations and assignments using the writers’ workshop model, review rubrics and alignment with secondary ELA standards and curricular mapping, and consider models for blended learning and digital writing portfolios.

Prof. Kist has taught middle and high school English, has served as a curriculum supervisor, and holds teacher, principal and superintendent licenses. Currently, he teaches education courses at Kent State University, as well as occasional classes in the English Department. Thus, he has observed firsthand the writing instruction gap that exists between the secondary and higher education levels, and he understands instructional strategies to bridge the gap.  He is the author of over 40 articles and four books, including New Literacies in Action, a 2005 National Council of Teachers of English Select Book, and Getting Started with Blended Learning: How Do I Integrate Online and Face-to-Face Instruction? (2015).
