PBIS: Classroom Management
Wednesday, January 11, 2017
This Event Is A Series Of Dates (See Below)
January 11, January 19 and February 9, 2017
Topic:   Behavior & Climate
Sponsored by:   SST 3
Presenter(s):   SST Consultants
Description:   This PD is a prerequisite for Tier II participation.

Schools implementing School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (SW-PBIS), identified three to five school-wide expectations and then defined specific behaviors for each expectation within their school’s settings. This series will help attendees align their classroom procedures to their school-wide expectations in order to increase instructional time and establish effective classroom learning environments.
This is a three –day series for PBIS team members, teachers and administrators who work in the schools that are implementing PBIS. Prior to day two, participants will be asked to collect baseline data on specific classroom management issues they are experiencing.

Participants will learn eight effective classroom practices:

1. Classroom expectations
2. Classroom procedures and routines
3. Encouraging expected behavior
4. Discouraging inappropriate behavior
5. Active supervision
6. Opportunities to respond
7. Activity sequencing and choice
8. Task difficulty

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn several Tier II interventions to introduce and utilize at the universal level with all students. Participants will choose at least one effective practice and develop a plan for implementation within their classroom. They will be expected to use the strategy in their classroom for at least two weeks, and collect data.

During the three day series, participants will work in groups to analyze scenarios using a problem solving process to determine strategies for improving classroom behavior. Participants will also present the results of their own use of effective practices in their classroom. They will develop an action plan for full implementation of effective classroom practices.

Participants can work as teacher teams during the sessions. However, participants will be encouraged to share their strategies with their school’s teacher based teams to explore and expand collaborative discussions around connecting academic and behavior data.

Participants will receive sharable materials and resources as the expectation is that ALL participants will be given time and opportunity to present this information to their building staff. These effective classroom practices should be implementing building-wide prior to implementing Tier II supports. Therefore, this PD session is a prerequisite for PBIS Tier II PD participation.
