Description: |
Targeted systems of positive behavior support (Tier 2 small group interventions) are strategies and procedures to support a group of students who display similar needs or behavioral concerns. Tier 2 interventions are only effective when schools have a strong foundation of universal (Tier 1) positive behavioral interventions and support (PBIS). Universal (Tier 1) supports means that all students are taught the school-wide rules and expectations, and teachers have proactive classroom management procedures in place. Tier 2 interventions are designed for students who demonstrate persistent problem behavior in classroom settings, but not dangerous or violent behaviors. These are students who do not respond well to school-wide behavioral expectations. They are not students with serious chronic behavior problems who require comprehensive individualized interventions. Participants will learn about evidence based Tier 2 interventions such as the Behavior Education Program/Check In Check Out; mentoring programs such as Check and Connect, social skills clubs, and interest-based clubs (homework, art, chess, sports and/or music). These interventions provide a means for students to actively practice the skills that are being re-taught and reinforced through the intervention. |
