This two day workshop will provide the scientific definition of dyslexia, and its common characteristics standardized by the International Dyslexia Association and the most effective research-based methodologies. Examples of multisensory structured language techniques based on the Orton-Gillingham philosophy in the areas of alphabet, reading, spelling and handwriting will be demonstrated. A detailed explanation of the language structure will be presented for reading and spelling, as well as, the six syllable types. Participants will be involved in interactive sessions that demonstrate ways to meet the challenges of teaching students with dyslexia. Aspects of the regularity of the language will be covered, such as frequency of letters and sounds for spelling and reading application and strategies for alphabet, reading, spelling and handwriting. Lesson planning techniques that assure coverage of essential components for student progress will be presented.
